Musical Appreciation: “Mary Jane/Mary Lane”

by admin ·

I was watching “Reefer Madness: The Musical” tonight, and I gotta say it’s my favorite musical of the last few years. It began as an off-Broadway show, before being made into a movie for Showtime. Catchy songs, and a hilariously irreverent message. The musical is based on the 1930s propaganda film of the same name.

Book Review: “Promises to Keep”

by admin ·

Joe Biden’s Promises To Keep details his life and his political career. Biden not only provides an excellent analysis of how he would deal with the problems facing this country, but also valuable insights into his internal motivations.

Promisestokeep For example, Biden starts the book by discussing a stuttering problem that hampered him greatly until high school. He worked hard to overcome the stutter, often standing in front of the mirror for hours repeating a single phrase until the stutter went away. Biden’s work ethic got him into a high school that his parents could afford; instead of settling for less, he spent the summer doing “work-study” — grounds crew/janitorial work — to make up the tuition difference.

McCain’s Internet

by admin ·

This struck me as particularly hilarious:

On a related note, I had a dream last night in which John McCain gave a speech saying something to the effect of, “Now a lot of people want to know what qualifies me for the presidency. Well, I take eleven medications, treating everything from my hair loss to my enlarged prostate. You gotta be careful with that many pills.

McCain v. McCain: Bush’s Third Term

by admin ·

Here’s a nice contrast between McCain’s words two weeks ago, and an appearance on Meet the Press from 2005.

The reason Obama says John McCain is running for Bush’s third term is because — as Sen. McCain himself put it — “on the transcendent issues, the most important issues” McCain is in “total agreement” with the President’s policies. Good luck winning with that message, Maverick.

The State of the Race

by admin ·

The New Republic has a short but convincing piece up on just how favorable the landscape looks for Barack Obama right now. This chart is the basic meat of it:

Just look at the massive gains we’ve made since 2004. Among the late Boomers, we’ve seen an insane fifteen point swing to the Democrats. We’ve also gained eleven points among young voters. While it’s the gain in late Boomers that will put us over the top, it’s the gain in young voters that shows which direction this country will be headed for the conceivable future.

One More for the Road

by admin ·

Now that Obama is the nominee, there will be far fewer opportunities for me to bash Clinton strategist Mark Penn. Luckily, he gave an interview to the GQ blog. I recommend reading the whole thing just because I think it’s important to provide Mark Penn an opportunity to tell his side of the story (though his basic point seems to be he didn’t have enough supporters within the campaign, and pretty much everything was someone else’s fault). Of the whole thing, what struck me most was this:

I Don’t Care

by admin ·

…who McCain or Obama selects to help vet their vice-presidential candidates. What does this have to do with anything? Policy advisers are one thing, the choice for vice presidents yet another, but the choice for the individual who is going to help vet the choices for vice president is completely inconsequential. I don’t have television, so I don’t know how much play this story is getting, but the fact that this kind of non-sense has trickled its way down to me is rather disturbing.

Minnesota Senate Race Update

by admin ·

Al Franken will be running against Norm Coleman for Minnesota’s senate seat. Unfortunately for Franken, he is having to deal with an odd side-issue relating to his past work as a comedian. Apparently, he wrote a satirical piece for Playboy that many people consider sexist and offensive (the article offended a number of Democrats, too).

The Middle Class

by admin ·

Watch in disbelief as Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) suggests that the middle class extends above households making $250,000/year. Is she from Pennsylvania or Neptune? For the record, as of 2004 the United States Census Bureau marked the middle three quintiles in income distribution as ranging from $18,000 at the lowest to $88,000 at the highest.
