Charles Vanel, whose real name was Charles-Marie Vanel (b. August 21, 1892 in Rennes, France, † April 15, 1989 in Cannes, France) is a French actor and director.
Son of parents traders settled in Paris, he was not happy being a teenager expelled from every school he attends. He tries to engage the navy, but his poor vision prevents it. Finally, he began performing in theater. This film debut in 1912 in Jim Crow Robert Peguy. He has toured in more than two hundred films over a period of 77 years.
In 2002, at the request of the filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier, Louis Sclavis recorded the soundtrack to a silent film made in 1930 by Charles Vanel: In the night.
