“Euro-Islamic or WAHAB ARABIA?

Across our continent is now debate about the need to illuminate what has been termed a Euro-Islamic, an Islam which, applying more spirit than the letter of the Quranic message, is consistent with the values of democracy, human rights, gender equality and the separation between state and religion. In France and have to work and from the Government, in cooperation with Muslim associations are attempting to build a French Islam, compatible with the Republic. In Spain, in the light of cases such as the claims of the imam of Fuengirola, perhaps not so crazy to join the task and assign to the promotion of Spanish Islam part of the vast fortune over 2,400 million per year - all taxpayers or non-Christians, believers and agnostics, we pay to the Catholic Church.

Book Review: “Promises to Keep”

Joe Biden’s Promises To Keep details his life and his political career. Biden not only provides an excellent analysis of how he would deal with the problems facing this country, but also valuable insights into his internal motivations.

Promisestokeep For example, Biden starts the book by discussing a stuttering problem that hampered him greatly until high school. He worked hard to overcome the stutter, often standing in front of the mirror for hours repeating a single phrase until the stutter went away. Biden’s work ethic got him into a high school that his parents could afford; instead of settling for less, he spent the summer doing “work-study” — grounds crew/janitorial work — to make up the tuition difference.

Book Review: Zbigniew Herbert’s “Collected Poems 1956-1998″

This is less a book review than a recommendation. I believe it’s difficult to “review” a collection of poetry. That said, I picked up Polish poet Zbigniew’s Herbert’s collected works over the weekend. The collection includes the complete text of all of the poetry collections published during Herbert’s lifetime (he died in 1998). Herbert was a member of the Polish resistance; his first work was not published until the end of Stalinism in 1956. The Collected Poems is a lengthy volume, clocking in at better than five hundred pages. I’ve not finished it yet, but have been struck by the intensity and clear voice of the poems I’ve read so far.
